Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – 08 JUNE 2026 – History was made in Tobago as Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago (SOTT) successfully hosted their inaugural Tobago Golf Games on May 25. Held at the Magdalena Grand Golf Course, the Tobago Golf Games marked the first-ever inclusion of golf in the SOTT Tobago Games lineup, creating new opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities to compete in the growing discipline.
Athletes from Happy Haven Special School, Tobago School for the Deaf, Speech and Language Impaired, and The Transformation Foundation competed in Individual Skills, 3-Hole and 6-Hole competitions.
The landmark event was supported by long-standing sponsor The Digicel Foundation, as well as Let’s Play Golf TT and the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association.
The Tobago community rallied behind the initiative, with attendees including Dr. Faith Brebnor, Deputy Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly, Mr. Keigon Denoon, Secretary of the Division of Youth Empowerment and Sport, and Mr. Ferdinand Bibby, National Director of Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago. In her remarks, Dr. Brebnor praised the athletes for demonstrating that “ability has no limits” and commended the continued expansion of sporting opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities.
The celebrations continued on May 28 with the Tobago Games, where athletes competed in athletics, bocce and football.
Throughout both events, the Tobago community delivered overwhelming support for the athletes, with families, teachers and spectators filling the venues with cheers, applause and blow horns during competitions and medal ceremonies.
Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago is now calling on communities across the country to replicate that level of support at upcoming National Games events, noting that the athletes deserve strong national encouragement wherever they compete.
The public is invited to attend the closing events of the SOTT National Games on June 13, 2026, with Aquatics taking place at the Diego Martin Swimming Pool from 9:00 a.m., Football and Basketball at the International School of Port of Spain (ISPS) from 9:00 a.m., followed by the Closing Ceremony at ISPS from 5:30 p.m.
The closing ceremony will feature the lighting of the cauldron as athletes from across Trinidad and Tobago come together to celebrate the culmination of the SOTT National Games.
