Belmont Primary Schools Celebrate International Literacy Day with session on Digital Safety
Digital Inclusion & Staff Engagement

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – 12 SEPTEMBER 2025: In celebration of International Literacy Day last Monday, the Digicel Foundation hosted a vibrant staff volunteer activation at ALTA’s Student Hub in Belmont. This initiative included reading to the students and a meaningful engagement on online safety as part of the Foundation’s Safer Internet Together (SIT) Campaign.
The event was held in collaboration with the Adult Literacy Tutors Association (ALTA), featuring 35 children from St. Margaret's Boys Anglican Primary School and Melville Memorial Girls Anglican Primary School. The morning was filled with learning, reading fun give-aways, and digital empowerment. For the past 3 years, team Digicel has commemorated International Literacy Day with dynamic reading activities. This year, the Foundation introduced digital literacy into the agenda, with the inclusion of its Safer Internet Together (SIT) Campaign. A campaign aimed to equip young students with essential skills for navigating today’s digital world confidently and responsibly.
The SIT Squad— a dedicated team of Digicel staff volunteers — led the activities, demonstrating the organisation’s emphasis on digital literacy and safer internet practices. The students were exposed to topics such as online safety, protecting personal information, and cyber bullying. “Literacy in today’s world must be both traditional and digital. As a member of staff, I’m proud to invest time in building both reading and digital literacy skills in the next generation.” shared SIT Squad volunteer Navin Balkissoon, Group Head of Commercial, Digicel.
The students left inspired and equipped with valuable tools to navigate the digital landscape safely. The event exemplifies how partnerships and community involvement can make a tangible difference in young lives. The activity is part of the Digicel Foundation’s Digital Citizenship agenda, where staff dedicate their time and expertise to build stronger, safer online communities for all.
