Two birds with one stone: the Digicel Foundation fulfills its promise by inaugurating its 191st and 192nd schools

Port-au-Prince, HAITI – June 28, 2023:
On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, the Digicel Foundation inaugurated two new schools in the Greater South region, fulfilling its promise made following the August 14, 2021 earthquake.
Initially, the Foundation had planned to allocate US$1 million for the reconstruction of schools destroyed in the region. In the end, nearly US$2 million were invested to rebuild and equip four schools located in the South and Grand’Anse departments. These reconstructions were achieved despite the difficult conditions in the country, thanks to the determination of a resilient team and the invaluable support of the local communities.
Following the inauguration of Collège Frères Unis de Ravine Sable and École Paul VI de Vieux Bourg (both in the South), it was now the turn of students from École Congréganiste Nationale St Michel de Charpentier (South) and École Nationale Congréganiste Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours de Latibolière (Grand’Anse) to move into their brand-new facilities. The warm welcome and festive atmosphere reflected the gratitude of both communities. From Latibolière to Charpentier, the Digicel Foundation successfully achieved two goals with one action!
Each of the two newly built schools includes 15 classrooms, along with all the facilities necessary for students’ growth and staff management — including playgrounds, administrative offices, and more. For the four reconstruction projects, the Foundation received support from Hope For Haiti for the first two schools and from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for the last two.
Mrs. Sophia Stransky, Executive Director of the Digicel Foundation, expressed her pride and satisfaction at the inauguration of the two schools:
“It took great determination to complete these constructions. I want to thank and congratulate our team and construction partners for their commitment and excellent work. We have now built 192 schools, benefiting more than 62,000 students, and we remain determined to keep education as our top priority, because we firmly believe that every child in this country deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
With these two inaugurations, the Digicel Foundation has reached a significant milestone in its mission to strengthen education in Haiti. These new schools represent an important step toward building a brighter future for young Haitians — particularly those in the Grand South region.
