INVESTING IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR YOUNG WOMEN

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 14, 2023: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO- Social media influencer and Founder of NGO- EmpowHER TT Avalon Gomez, was one of five media personnel who received a TT$20,000 grant through the Digicel Foundation ‘Media Transformation’ initiative. The Foundation issued a call for applications from Journalists and Social media influencers to submit applications for the grant to implement projects that will transform communities.

Avalon’s NGO EmpowHER TT focuses on connecting, educating and empowering women for professional success. In keeping in line with her NGO’s mission, Avalon used the grant to develop a youth and women’s development hub at the Arouca Community Centre.

This was made possible through a partnership with Councillor Josiah Austin and the Arouca Village Council.  The programme is open to young women and youth from Arouca, Dinsley and wider Arima.  The hub will create a space for women and youth to access services critical for professional development. Avalon and her team will conduct a series of workshops throughout a six week period which will focus on topics such as resume writing, brand development, image consultancy and building your professional social media platform. Each participant will also have the opportunity to receive a professional head shot as part of their recruitment portfolio. The space was outfitted with furniture, computers, printer, camera and other supplies.

Digicel Foundation Operations Manager, Cindyann Currency who was present at the opening of the programme earlier this week shared professional advice with participants. She explained that the Digicel Foundation was in the business of helping people who help others and this was a great opportunity for them to capitalise on and share their knowledge with others.
