50 YOUNG WOMEN MOVE TO FINAL STAGE OF GIRLS POWER TECH 2021

THURSDAY JULY 08, 2021: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – Ten teams of five young women between the ages of 13-18 years have been shortlisted to participate in Digicel Foundation’s Girls Power Tech 2021 on July 15-16.  The flagship initiative is designed to inspire girls and young women to consider and pursue careers in the male dominated ICT field.

In commemoration of International Girls in ICT Day 2021, which was celebrated in April, the Digicel Foundation simultaneously issued a timely call for 30 teams of five girls to register to be a part of this year’s the female tech- empowerment event. Exceeding expectations, a whopping 46 teams registered to participate.  Subsequently, each registered team was required to submit a one-page proposal with a tech- based solution to a social challenge.

Out of the 26 teams that submitted proposals, ten of these were shortlisted to compete in the final stage of Girls Power Tech Hackathon.  These teams are as follows; Digital Destroyers- Gasparillo, HNC Hackers- Petit Valley, WES48 Tech Girls- Arouca, G-United- Princes Town, SJCSF Trouble Shooters- Gasparillo, HTTP- Debe/Penal, Code Name Techno Girls- Sangre Grande, SJCSF Tech Defenders- San Fernando, Star Tech- Laventille and El Dorado Golden Girls- El Dorado. Additionally, the first 30 teams will receive tokens for early bird registration

The theme for this year’s GPT event is ‘The Next Gen of Women’. Girls Power Tech is meant to inspire and empower young women aged 13yrs-18yrs to pursue or consider careers in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). GPT is a two day event filled with Tech Demonstrations, Influential Speakers and Mentors to guide and motivate participants. On Day 2, participants are engaged in a “Hackathon” with the event culminating with a mini concert on the virtual beach. The Hackathon which is a main feature of the GPT event, challenges the young women to brain storm and develop technology- based solutions for social challenges. The topics this year will focus on Renewable Energy and Energy Solutions, Education, and Gender Based Violence.

Girls Power Tech is being sponsored by Digicel Business, Shell Trinidad and Tobago Ltd and, Loop TT. The 2- day event will be hosted via Caesar’s Army Antillea World – a virtual reality space and Microsoft teams.
