WEDNESDAY APRIL 21, 2021: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – The residents and administrators of Court Shamrock Centre for the Socially Displaced stood proud and completed refurbishment work to their night shelter last Friday. The non-profit organisation was one of the four finalists chosen to receive a TTD50,000 grant through the Digicel Foundation’s ‘Better Together’ initiative in December of last year.
Court Shamrock Centre for the Socially Displaced amongst 100 other applicants was challenged with proposing an initiative that would make a difference in the lives of the people they serve. Enthusiastically, the group applied to receive funding for the replacement of the roof, construction of a wall, installation of lattice securing the entire building, purchase of double-decker beds and kitchen appliances (stove/fridge), minor upgrades to the bathroom and painting of both internal and external walls.
The male only shelter was established over 21 years ago by the San Fernando Regional Corporation and presently serves as a home for 22 men. Speaking at the launch of the event, Gloria Coombs, Manager at Court Shamrock said that the past few months have been a journey,“Court Shamrock tries to bring out the best in people so they are can regain self-confidence and contribute to society in a meaningful way.” She profusely thanked the Digicel Foundation for funding the long-overdue upgrades and added that now the residents at the night shelter can be comfortable. One of the residents shared, “We enjoyed working on the project. What was outstanding for us is that for the first time in our lives we completed something and this was one of the biggest accomplishments for some of us.”
Digicel Foundation Operations Manager, Cindy Ann Currency congratulated the team at Court Shamrock for their amazing work. She said, “We understand that this is just a small fix to the larger problem. However, we saw the worthiness of the project and we were happy to partner with Court Shamrock, as they continue to serve the community of San Fernando.”
