THURSDAY MARCH 11, 2021: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO - The Mt. St. George Police Youth Club has been busy ensuring that Tobago youth are not left behind. This is evidenced in their recent EPIC initiative, to upgrade the youth-friendly space, making it more accessible to those in the community. Through a partnership with the Digicel Foundation the Mt. St George Police Youth Club received a grant of TTD35,000 in 2020 and unveiled the completed initiative earlier this week.
The group used their grant to construct walls, install windows and doors, and upgrade their toilet facilities. Head of the Mt. St. George Police Youth Club, Corporal Larry Brathwaite expressed that he was overwhelmed with joy because now the young people have a home where they can gather. He said, “This youth development centre will be the main hub for engaging the young people in our community in sports, culture, education, and other activities that will empower and transform their lives.”
One member of the youth club, Akeem Alleyne shared that he felt very happy to see their vision for the facility come to life. He added, “I look forward to all the different activities that will be taking place to benefit the people in the community, particularly the young men.”
Corporal Braithwaite additionally explained that the upgrade was just the 1st phase of work being done towards the overall development of the facility. Soon, the Mt. St. George Police Youth Club will be embarking on phase 2 which will involve the construction of a basketball court, netball court, a space for futsal, Play Park and a car park. The Digicel Foundation is always open to partnerships with groups such as Mt. St. George Police Youth Club. Their EPIC project is one of 100 community-based initiatives that have been funded by the Foundation since 2016.
