COMPUTER CLASSES FOR LA HORQUETTA COMMUNITY

MONDAY DECEMBER 14, 2020: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO- The children, parents and elderly residents of La Horquetta can now take computer literacy classes, thanks to the La Horquetta Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Digicel Foundation. With ten desktop computers, routers and a printer, they will be better prepared to cope with the new normal.

Lenard Pierre, Personal Ministries Leader, explained that the Church had realized that several people in the La Horquetta community and environs did not have devices and some residents wanted to become computer literate. “When the opportunity came to apply for the EPIC grant we submitted our application because we knew the community would benefit from the computer literacy classes, once the ICT Lab is set up,” he said. “We’re focused on making sure the young people, in particular, become computer literate. But we also understand that we also have to equip the parents and grandparents who take care of the children, so they can be help them through online school. This computer lab is an ideal project for a time like this.”

Senator the Honourable Foster Cummings, Minister in the Ministry of Works and Member of Parliament for La Horquetta/Talparo, also partnered with the La Horquetta SDA by providing executive chairs for the ICT Lab.  He noted that the computer lab will be put to use since online learning is absolutely critical in this pandemic period. “It is good to see the Church taking its role seriously in the community because the job cannot be done by politicians alone,” said Senator Cummings.

The La Horquetta SDA submitted its application to the Digicel Foundation earlier this year to receive TT$35,000 to outfit an ICT Lab for their Computer Literacy Programme for the residents of La Horquetta and environs. Under its Extraordinary Projects Impacting Communities (EPIC) Programme. This initiative was also done in collaboration with the Management and Board of Directors of the La Horquetta Regional Complex which provided the space for the classes. The EPIC Project Launch took place on Tuesday 8th December.
