EPIC “READING ROOM” FOR BEAUSEJOUR COMMUNITY

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 2019:  PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – Children from the Beausejour community in Blue Basin were all smiles at the launch of the Beausejour Community Council “Reading Room” on September 7.

“The Reading Room” provides a unique experience for children who can sit comfortably and enjoy the clean, mobile-free zone in a relaxing environment.  This initiative is an extension of the Community’s homework centre. The purpose of “The Reading Room” is to boost reading and literacy attainment of the children within the community.

In delivering her remarks at the opening of “The Reading Room”, Elizabeth Belcon, President of the Beausejour Community Council stated that she cried upon hearing that the Council’s application for the project was approved, as it seemed that “Beausejour always seemed to be a forgotten community”.  Ms. Belcon thanked the Digicel Foundation for making their dream come true.

The Beausejour Community Council applied to the Digicel Foundation Extraordinary Projects Impacting Communities (EPIC) Programme for a grant to build the specialised room. The project cost US$4,889, to cover the cost of purchasing books, book shelves, furniture, an air condition unit, lighting fixtures and the installation of windows.

The Digicel Foundation remains open to partnerships with groups such as the Beausejour Community Council that seeks to provide a loving and caring environment for children to learn to read and succeed academically.
