AQUAPONICS SYSTEM FOR SPECIAL SCHOOL

MONDAY NOVEMBER 20 2017 - The students and teachers at the New Beginnings Special School in Petit Valley were all excited on Friday November 17 as they began the installation of a 6-Pipe Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) Aquaponics Unit. The Digicel Foundation donated TT$10,000.00 to assist with the start-up costs of purchasing fingerlings, seedlings and feed for the system.

Aquaponics which is a symbiotic system that combines hydroponics and agriculture teaches and instils in the children the value of sustainable development and entrepreneurship.  The Foundation partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries who designed the system and will provide training and technical advice to the school.

Operations Manager Cindyann Currency and a representative from the Ministry visited the school and interacted with the students and teachers.

Mrs. Nunuez, Teacher at New Beginnings thanked the Digicel Foundation and the Ministry for this opportunity and stated “The students are very excited to begin the programme and it is my hope that the older students would see a future in aquaponics farming.”

The Aquaponics Programme which began in 2014 and has been implemented in 17 Special Needs Schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago, will be used as part of the holistic education for the 28 students at New Beginnings.
