For the love of teaching - New intakes for the Isi Learning Teacher Training Program

The 6th Isi Learning Teacher Training Program commenced on March 11 at the Gerehu Unity Foursquare Gospel Church. A total of 70 teachers from various Community Learning Centres in the National Capital District, Central and Gulf Provinces are attending the 6 week training program which will see them graduate at the end of the course with a basic teaching certificate. The Isi Learning Teacher training program is an initiative of the Foursquare Church and fully funded by Digicel PNG Foundation. The training comprises of two phases with Phase 1 being the professional skills and teaching skills component and Phase 2 being the Sounds Write Phonics Course. The training is then followed by 32 weeks of professional practice, during which time the teachers are assessed during field visits by the program facilitators. The teachers who come through the Isi Learning Teacher Training Program are teachers who are passionate about teaching in their village of community pre-schools or Community Learning Centres (CLCs). CLC schools are informal pre-schools set-up by concerned members socially marginalised communities who want to provide an education opportunity for the little children in their areas. Many of these teachers are volunteers who don't get paid but do it because they are passionate about teaching and making a difference in a young person's life. Teachers in NCD receive a small fortnightly pay provided by the Governor of NCD through his discretionary funds. The Foundation is currently negotiating with Governors of Central and Gulf provinces for the same arrangements for the CLC teachers from their respective provinces.
