Men of Honour Awards supporting prosperity without violence on Independence

16th September 2014 – Port Moresby: Digicel PNG Foundation celebrated the 39th Independence Anniversary of Papua New Guinea by participating in the festivities organised by the National Capital District Commission in Port Moresby. The NCDC organised celebrations were themed, “Unity by Diversity – Prosperity without Violence”. Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Beatrice Mahuru, expressed gratitude to NCDC and the NCD Governor, Hon. Powers Parkop for the invitation to participate in the Independence activities. “Digicel PNG Foundation is pleased that our vision of a prosperous Papua New Guinea without violence is shared by the Commission and the NCD Governor. As we commemorate the 39th Independence anniversary of our nation, we reflect on how far we have progressed as a people. Our national pledge speaks about building a democratic society based on justice, equality, respect and prosperity for our people. Our Men of Honour Awards is all about promoting Papua New Guinean men who are living these values and changing their communities for the better. Digicel PNG Foundation is using this opportunity to create awareness about the Awards, engage with the general public and encourage citizens to put nominations forward,” Mahuru said. Digicel PNG Foundation’s Men of Honour Float was a key attraction of the float parade and attracted many, encouraging waves and comments from observers as it travelled down the Sir Hubert Murray highway, down town and eventually stopped at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium outside oval at Konedobu. The Men of Honour information stall was also accessed by members of the general public wanting to find out what the campaign was all about. The Men of Honour Awards are not achievement awards, rather, they are character awards. The Men of Honour Award encourages people to think about Papua New Guinean men who espouse good qualities and values in their work, their families and their communities to assist and advocate on behalf of vulnerable persons. The Men of Honour Awards are divided into six categories: the Community Ingenuity Award, Sporting Mentor Award, Community Entrepreneur Award, the Community Education Champion, Community Leadership Award and the 2014 Man of Honour Award. Nominations for the Men of Honour are now open and will close on the 12th December 2014. Nomination forms are available from all Digicel outlets. The Awards will be given during the Men of Honour Award Gala Night scheduled for March 2015.
