Kingston, Jamaica – May 23rd, 2024 – Digicel Foundation, in partnership with the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at Convent of Mercy (Alpha) Academy launched a climate change park to promote environmental sustainability at the school. The park was constructed on Labour Day on May 23, 2024, where scores of Digicel staff joined parents and students to participate in the project.

The climate change park project included building a gazebo, planting flowers, painting a mural about recycling, and installing seating areas. This initiative aims to provide a practical learning space for students to understand the importance of recycling and environmental stewardship.

The PTA Vice-President Richard Lawrence highlighted the significance of the project. He explained, “This garden is not only a beautiful addition to our school but also an essential educational tool. It will help our students understand and address the challenges of climate change and recycling.”

Charmaine Daniels, CEO of Digicel Foundation, commented on the project saying, “Our goal is to foster environmental awareness among students. This garden at ‘Alpha’ Academy will serve as a daily reminder of the importance of sustainability and proactive environmental practices.”

In addition to the park, Digicel Foundation staff engaged in several other Labour Day projects including giving a fresh coat of paint to Genesis Academy, painting classrooms at the Salvation Army School for the Blind in partnership with the NCB Foundation and beautifying the Family and Parent Centre in St. James, led by Digicel Board Director, Joy Clark.
