Digicel Foundation refurbishes multipurpose court in Thornton

Thornton Community has always been a hub of sporting activity producing national athletes as well as other popular sporting figures.

The Social Development Commission has been working with the Thornton Youth & Community Club for the last 2 years in strengthening the organization especially through building advocacy skills. Through this process they believe a facility such as this would address community cohesion and integration, facilitate interaction within the Balaclava Development Area and serve as a means for talent to be identified and nurtured.

Digicel Foundation has funded the refurbishing of a multi-purpose court to the members of the Thornton community, St. Elizabeth. This was refurbished to the tune of JA $6.2 Million. Work carried out on the facilities by the Digicel Foundation include the installation of first-class seating stands as well as improved lighting to the entire complex that will facilitate sporting competitions in the nights on the multi-purpose court.

Located in the midst of the Appleton Sugar Estate, the multi-purpose court currently serves 9,527 residents from the communities of Aberdeen, Balaclava, Bogue, Quickstep, Roses Valley, Siloah and Thorton in St. Elizabeth. The upgraded facility will therefore support a variety of sporting tournaments including netball, volleyball and basketball – sporting ventures, which bring these communities together.
