Kingston, Jamaica – 09 January 2009: Digicel Rising Star 2008 winner, Cameal Davis, handed over a check of one million dollars to Best Care Foundation to assist with the renovation and refurbishing of its old library and classroom.
The proceeds from the Rising Star final show are usually donated to a charity selected by Digicel Foundation or the Rising Star production team. Last year, Best Care Foundation was selected based on Digicel Foundation’s recommendation. The Child Care Facility is in dire need for an indoor play area for the more physically and mentally challenged children who live at the facility.
In addition Best Care Foundation has had an existing library and classroom that it would like to renovate and expand into a larger classroom so that it can host other physically challenged students from outside the child care facility. “I am pleased that we were able to do this”, noted 2008 Digicel Rising Star winner Cameal Davis, “hopefully I will get to do something more for Best Care Foundation in the future.”
Marketing Executive at Digicel, Janene Effs has urged other corporate organizations to get on board and help out the children at Best Care Foundation. “Giving one million dollars to Best Care Foundation is only a start and gives us such a wonderful feeling to know that we are apart of this project” added Effs.
The funds will be used to cover as much renovation and equipping costs as possible. This will involve renovating the indoor play area with mats, exercise machines and play equipment as well as expanding the existing classroom.”There is a serious need for this kind of help at Best Care Foundation and it is interesting to see that Digicel Rising Star is not only about entertainment, but also about the development of others who are very vulnerable in our society” said Orville Johnson, Chairman of Best Care Foundation.
Best Care Foundation will start construction and renovation early this month. The primary school was recently approved by the Ministry of Education and will receive further assistance from the Special Education Unit of the Ministry of Education.
