Located in Hagley Park, St Andrew; Cockburn Gardens Primary & Junior High School suffers from a very low literacy rate, with approximately 70% of the pupils reading below the standard reading level. The Ministry of Education recognized this problem and has posted a specialized reading teacher at the school that helps pupils, as well as others in the region, to improve their reading ability. One huge obstacle facing the Cockburn learners was a Resource Room that was in appalling condition and needed much development and upgrading.
The Digicel Foundation donated J$2 (approx. US$277,000) million towards this project and created a specialized Reading and Resource Room, equipped with new computers, reading and learning materials as well as state of the art media equipment which pupils will use each day under the supervision of trained staff to improve their reading skills. Subsequent to the Foundation’s involvement in the project, other donations have been received which will greatly enhance the facility and the pupil’s learning environment
