Labour Day Project 2008 at the Tegwyn Unit (part of the National Children's Home)

The Digicel Foundation’s Labour Day project for 2008 was conducted at the Tegwyn Unit (part of the National Children’s Home) situated in St. Andrew. The Tegwyn Unit is home to 32 mentally and physically disabled individuals, ages 4 to 30 years old, who have been abandoned by their families and currently cared for by the home.

A major part of contributions to this home is that of donations (cash and kind) in addition to the hard work contributed by Digicel staff members and various companies. Over 10 containers of women’s and girl’s clothes were collected along with numerous boxes of food and personal care items, cleaning equipment, toys and books. The project was well supported by thirty (30) Cadetsfrom the Kingston College High School who came out to assist the approximately 30 Digicel staff & Foundation Board members with manual labour.

The project entailed painting the inside areas of the home, planting of a vegetable & sensory garden and beautifying the outdoor area. A DVD player, DVD’s and CD’s were also donated so that each day the children can be entertained and stimulated by educational and fun music and videos. While all the work was taking place the children were fed and read to in addition to being entertained with face and body painting, live music and stories. To top it off, the kids were also treated with sweets.

The day was a well spent and satisfying one resulting in both the children and staff being able to enjoy a fresh and brightened up environment. Thanks to the team effort of all who donated, in one way or another, the contributionsenabled a very successful day that the children thoroughly enjoyed.
