DIGICEL FOUNDATION SAYS ‘WALK GOOD, HARRY’

Kingston, Jamaica – Friday, December 21, 2007:The Digicel Foundation on Thursday, December 20 bade farewell to outgoing Chairman, and Digicel Chief Customer Relations Officer Harry Smith with an intimate yet lively gathering at the Hope Gardens bandstand, which the Foundation helped to renovate as part of its ongoing project of reviving Hope Gardens.

The event featured items from some of the Foundation projects in which Smith was personally involved, including items by students from the Jesse Ripoll and Ascot Primary Schools, where the Foundation established Reading Resource Rooms to help students improve their literacy standards. The award-winning Jesse Ripoll Dance group performed as did the Ascot Primary Choir and band.

Telecom provider Digicel established the Digicel Foundation in 2004. The Digicel Foundation proactively helps to empower communities and promote self-reliance through its support for skills training, education, sports and other social programmes. Through these activities, the Foundation aims to build community spirit across Jamaica.

Among other projects implemented by the Foundation are:

  • J $1 million and an 8-seater van to the Jamaica Society for the Blind, to aid transportation and purchase visual aids.
  • J$9 million construction of Flower Hill Basic School in St. James.

· J$2 million Reading Resource Centre and Mini-Library for Savannah-La-Mar Prep and High School in Westmoreland

  • J$2.3 million Reading Resource Room for Knockalva Technical High School, located in Hanover.
