Portmore Lane Homework Center

Project Summary: Portmore Lane

Marked by serious poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and crime, the economically-depressed community of Portmore Lane in St. Catherine had no place to operate an existing outreach programme to provide vital additional educational opportunities for its residents.

In a joint venture with the Covenant Community Church, the Digicel Foundation helped to strengthen the community by contributing J$2.5 million to the refurbishing and equipping of two shipping containers to be used as the Portmore Lane Advanced Centre for Education (PLACE).

The Center offers assistance to students with homework and school related activities, as well as providing youth remedial reading classes and literacy classes for adults. Digicel staff member Leon Atkins initiated the project and devotes much time to the Centre.

The donation also supplied the Centre with computers, books, stationery, desks and chairs. Portmore Lane and the wider Portmore Gardens and Cumberland communities are now benefiting from a strong support mechanism for supplementary education at the PLACE
