The non-profit organization Digicel Foundation donated kitchen fixtures, fittings and other household items to the ‘Dare to Care’ Mustard Seed Home in Spanish Town St. Catherine. This gift is in keeping with a desire by a group of Digicel staff members last Christmas, to assist the children of ‘Dare To Care.’
The items were handed over on Friday, June 24 at the ‘Dare to Care’ Home and Digicel Foundation Board Members also got an opportunity to meet and interact with the very special children that live in that remarkable facility.
Major General Robert Neish, Executive Director of the Foundation, explained , “The Foundation encourages staff participation in community activities and a group of staff in Customer Care supported the Mustard Seed Home and made the request. The Foundation was happy to assist and we know that these items will be put to good use”.
Besides monetary assistance, the Foundation also wants to utilize employee involvement with the home and with over 1,000 employees, Digicel holds tremendous promise for assisting communities through employees’ time, money, expertise and leadership.
For Donna Reynolds, Administrator at the Mustard Seed Communities, this generous donation will greatly benefit the home. “These kitchen items will help to create a healthy environment to prepare wholesome meals for the kids. They will also beautify the surroundings and make it more attractive for the children and visitors to the home”.
Ms. Reynolds also commented on the needs of the home, which opened its doors in 2000, “Funding is always needed to cover our monthly expenses but we also need food, household items and toiletries. Interaction with other people is very important and we encourage everyone to visit these exceptional children”. ‘Dare to Care’ is home to several HIV positive children.
The Digicel Foundation was established in 2004 to improve the quality of life in communities across Jamaica by suppporting community based and driven activities; embracing social, cultural and particularly educational opportunities. All projects undertaken by the Foundation promote opportunities for members of the community and encourage volunteerism and civic engagement.
Since its launch late last year, the Foundation has rebuilt the Lakes Pen Basic School in St. Catherine, committed JA$200 million towards Hurricane Ivan relief efforts, provided recreational facilities to Arnett Gardens in Kingston and Farm Heights/ Rose Heights in St. James and committed JA$6 million in matching funds to the Stella Maris Foundation which implements skills training programmes for the innercity community of Grants Pen in St. Andrew.
