NEW SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR COLLEGE FRERES UNIS DE RAVINE SABLE AND ECOLE PRESBYTERALE OF POIRIER

Port-au-Prince, HAITI - December 11, 2020: This week, the Digicel Foundation launched the construction of Collège Frères Unis de Ravine Sable as a result of its partnership with Hope for Haiti. Additionally, in August, the Foundation renewed its cooperation with the Spiritans for the construction of Ecole Presbyterale de Poirier in the commune of Saint-Marc.

Since its creation in Haiti, the Digicel Foundation has been promoting joint efforts to improve living conditions in communities across the country and has been partnering with like-minded organizations working to achieve this same goal. With a network of 24 schools, Hope for Haiti is, without a doubt, an organization that invests significantly in Haiti’s education sector. The Foundation will support Collège Frères Unis de Ravine Sable, one of the schools within the Hope for Haiti network, by building four classrooms, a computer lab room, an administration, and a modern sanitary block.

The fifth communal section of Cavaillon, Ravine Sable is famous for its cassava and mango crops. This community of nearly 9,000 people has access to 5 schools, including Collège Frères Unis de Ravine Sable in Cavaillon, an institution that has been serving the area for 20 years. The school operates thanks to the invaluable support of Hope for Haiti, an organization that has been working in the far south of the country for approximately 30 years to improve the quality of life of the Haitian people, especially children.

This is a HUGE new development for the Ravine Sable community. We are very grateful for this opportunity to develop the school's infrastructure. I know that Rode (school principal), all the teachers,

students and parents will be thrilled as well. Thank you and let everyone involved with the Digicel Foundation know how much this means to us and our partners at Ravine Sable," said Skyler Badenoch, Executive Director of Hope for Haiti.

Among other things, the Foundation is in the midst of building Ecole Presbyterale de Poirier, one of the few schools serving a community of 20,000 people in Bocozelle, the fifth communal section of the city of Saint Marc. This school will benefit from 9 classrooms, an administration, a sanitation block, a perimeter wall and a reservoir. According to the Foundation’s forecast and given the considerable progress made in the execution of the project, the beginning of 2021 should mark a new era for the hundreds of students attending this educational institution.

Ecole Presbyterale de Poirier operates under the aegis of the Spiritans who, since their arrival in the country in 1853, have actively participated in the strengthening of the educational sector through literacy programs and the establishment of schools. After the earthquake in January 2010, many of its schools were affected, including Petit Séminaire Collège Saint Martial for which the Digicel Foundation built 12 classrooms. This intervention initiated the reconstruction of the institution's premises. Since then, a close collaboration was established, and content with the congregation’s good management, it is with pleasure that the Foundation is financing and executing this new school construction project.

We have been waiting a long time for the construction of a school that meets the needs of the schoolchildren of the region, and we are happy to be able to assist in its implementation. The whole community thanks the Digicel Foundation," said one of the area's residents.

Indeed, each school construction has a particular story: communities full of will with a lack of resources, remote localities almost inaccessible by road, organizations or congregations willing to help, etc. The Digicel Foundation's main mission is to support them. The 182 schools already built and the more than 60,000 students who attend them are the materialization of this commitment that has been going on for the past 13 years.
