Our Teacher Training programme was started in June of 2008.
After an initial evaluation with all the schools at the beginning of 2008 it was highlighted that out of a total of 156 teachers 118 of the teachers had completed Ecole Fondamentale (primary education), 66 had completed secondary school and 56 had completed a 3rd level education. Of the 56 that had completed a third level only 19 had focused on education. Thirty-two of the teachers have not completed any level of formal education. Quality teachers are the cornerstone of quality education. In order to support these schools to deliver quality education we decided that professional training for all staff members was paramount.
This is a three year programme. Each yearly project consists of an initial evaluation to assess the standard of the teachers followed by a five week intensive training programme during the school summer vacation. Each school will then receive a follow-up assessment and coaching visit between November and March by the training organisation. This project is repeated for three years, after which time the teachers will receive a certificate recognized by the Ministry of Education.
The training is delivered by an organisation called ID ( www.id-ong.org) in Jean Rabel in the North west Department. The teachers are currently about to embark on their second phase of face-to-face training.
