GOODWILL INDUSTRIES GETS 10/10 FOR FIRE/LIFE SAFETY MEASURES

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 27, 2021: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO- Goodwill Industries located on Fitzblackman Drive, Woodbrook was given two thumbs up from Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service Prevention Unit last Monday. The Officers, conducted its first post- inspection visit at the institution, to evaluate their fire and safety upgrades, as part of the Digicel Foundation’s Preparing You programme. The safety upgrades included the installations of Fire Alarm & Detection System, Fire Extinguisher Equipment, Egress Signs and practical Emergency Planning & Training with students and administration documented as the school’s Emergency Response Plan.

This particular exercise forms part of the Digicel Foundations’ Preparing You programme which incorporates planning for natural disasters and emergencies as something every educational institution must consider, regardless of its size, demographic or location.

In 2019, through continued partnership the HSE Management of Digicel and officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Prevention Unit, six schools underwent a thorough assessment of facilities, risks, hazards, vulnerabilities and capacities to determine the adequacy of Fire/Life Safety measures. Several deficiencies in the existing Fire Safety measures were revealed with recommendations made to achieve approval of the Chief Fire Officer.

Officer Edwards took special note of the ongoing housekeeping efforts underway at the school, and commended Mrs Barbara Alleyne and the Foundation for the improvements made since her initial inspection visit to the school in 2019. Officer Bartholomew reiterated the need for attention to detail as it relates to signage and practice of evacuation drills given the composition of the school population.

Part of the certification process for the schools entails the submission of Emergency Response Plans for each school, Reports on Evacuation Drills completed, Plan detailing placement of extinguishers, exit signs and muster point, First Aid certification of Teachers and Report on servicing of fire extinguishers and fire alarm systems where applicable.
