FRIDAY, JANUARY 31, 2020: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – Hospice care was founded with the belief that even if you are terminally ill, your quality of life for those final stages should be as comfortable as possible. This is the overall objective of the Vitas House Hospice, which provides 24-hour medical and nursing care to terminally ill cancer patients daily. Having a functional kitchen space to prepare meals for patients is integral to daily operations. As such, Vitas House partnered with Digicel Foundation to refurbish the kitchen. The EPIC initiative was unveiled on January 23.
The partnership began in 2019 with US$5,000 in funding to cover; the purchase of kitchen appliances; installation of kitchen cupboards; and other refurbishment work. The staff members at the Vitas House Hospice now have a comfortable, practical space to prepare meals for their patients and the benefit of additional storage space.
Speaking at the launch of this project, Dr. Asante Charles-Le Blanc, Chairman of the Vitas House Board of Directors said that “although a kitchen may not appear to be something incredible. It is the heart of any home and it is an integral part of the Vitas House Hospice operation.” She said that words could not express how thankful everyone at the Vitas House Hospice was to the Digicel Foundation for their kind and generous donation. She also thanked Mrs. Lisa Hadad for leading the project and assisting in ensuring that the project was successfully completed.
Penny Gomez, CEO Digicel Foundation thanked Dr. Asante Charles-Le Blanc for her kind words. In pointing out her admiration for the work done by the Vitas House Hospice, Gomez said “we partner with organizations such as Vitas House Hospice to help them achieve their goals and transform lives together.” She added, “there are no words to describe the value of the service that you offer to the many families who have benefitted from Hospice care. Your commitment to giving the residents a comfortable and peaceful environment to live out the rest of their lives in dignity is beyond commendable and we hope that you are rewarded ten-fold.”
