PRINCESS ELIZABETH CENTRE GETS A BOOST FOR RELOCATION AND RECONSTRUCTION SURGICAL SUITE PROJECT

MONDAY AUGUST 26 2019:  PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – On August 15, the Digicel Foundation became the newest organization to partner with The Children’s Ark on the relocation and reconstruction of the surgical ward and operating theatre at the Princess Elizabeth Centre, Ariapita Avenue, Port of Spain.

Over the years, the Centre has been affected by floods which has caused ruin to costly medical equipment necessary for the care of the children and has disrupted the daily routine of surgeries.

This project, spearheaded by The Children’s Ark is seen as a critical one to the Digicel Foundation since according to Penny Gomez, CEO, Digicel Foundation: “The Foundation believes strongly in the work that the Centre undertakes to ensure that children with special needs are afforded facilities that will help them lead healthy, happy lives.” At the cheque presentation, Ms. Gomez commended The Children’s Ark for their initiative in taking on this noteworthy project. She explained that through this collaborative partnership the Foundation is committed to making this project a reality.

In discussing the venture, Ms. Simone de la Bastide, President of The Children’s Ark and the driver behind this project ( along with Dr. Achong Low, VP of TCA) indicated that the request to rebuild the Surgical Suite came to TCA from the CEO of Princess Elizabeth. She said that children at the Centre were either awaiting surgery or undergoing rehabilitative therapy and it was disheartening to have them deal with this inconvenience on an ongoing basis.

The Foundation applauds The Children’s Ark and the other contributors who have partnered on this noteworthy project. The contribution ofTT$250,000.00 was made possible through the Digicel Foundation’s Centres of Excellence programme, which seeks to improve the quality of facilities serving the special needs community.
