FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9 2018: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO –The University of the Southern Caribbean, Master of Science Occupational Therapy Department became the latest beneficiary of the Digicel Foundation’s Centres of Excellence, on October 31.
The Centres of Excellence Programme is an initiative, which seeks to upgrade the facilities of institutions caring for persons with special needs that are in dire repair. This is done by bringing up each facility up to internationally accepted standards.
This partnership was sealed when the Digicel Foundation presented a cheque in the sum of TT$130,000 to the University of the Southern Caribbean, Master of Science Occupational Therapy Department.
Work to be conducted at the Occupational Therapy (OT) Department would include refurbishment of male and female restrooms to meet international accessibility codes; and upgrades to the OT Department Building to facilitate functional accessibility.
Other areas to be upgraded would be the Occupational Therapy Training and Resource Training Simulation Lab as a mini apartment with the specialized items to be used by occupational therapists.
The Foundation’s partnership would also feature the approval of the Masters Occupational Therapy student-led research which utilizes the recently concluded “Therapy Based Education Programme” Report and Assessment, as the basis for investigation at three special needs schools over the period Oct 2018 to March 2020.
With the outcomes of this research, recommendations would be put forward for the sustainable implementation of OT in 15 special needs schools. The title of this research award would be the Digicel Student Occupational Therapy Research Award.
