TRINBAGO KNIGHT RIDERS #PLAYUNIFIED WITH PERSONS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

TUESDAY AUGUST 21 2018:  PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – Over 40 students from Special Needs schools recently braved the rains for the opportunity to meet and train alongside some of the cricketers of the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR).

The students, some of whom are athletes with the Special Olympics of Trinidad and Tobago (SOTT), spent the two-hour intensive training session with Denesh Ramdin, Anderson Phillip, Amir Jangoo and Assistant Coach Imran Jan, learning essential cricketing skills such as pitching, short catching and posture for effective fielding and striking.

The TKR cricketers were clearly very impressed by the natural talent displayed by some of the students. Jan commented, “Every year we come out to spend some time with the kids and every year I’m blown away by the enthusiasm, the love and the raw talent, it’s a great experience.”

In spite of the inclement weather, the students from the Goodwill Industries, Lady Hochoy Penal, Lady Hochoy Gasparillo and National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) were able to play a unified match with the cricketers. At the end of the short game, each student received a certificate of participation.

Unified sport is a bridge towards social inclusion, where games comprise players with and without intellectual disabilities. Over the past six years the Digicel Foundation has been advocating for the inclusion of persons with special needs at key national events. This particular occasion was held in collaboration with Cricket Premier League (CPL).
