The Early Learning Program is the Foundation’s flagship education program aimed at improving school readiness for children at age 4-6 years old through supporting informal Early Learning Centers in different communities. The program has two components; 1. Teacher Training 2. Rewards and Incentives.
The teacher training program links the passion of community based teachers with a sound knowledgeable base to effectively deliver early childhood learning and development programs. The structure of the program is to conduct a 6-week training program followed by 34 weeks of practical teaching. During the weeks of teaching assessments are conducted and based on the achievement of each teacher they then graduate with a Certificate of Early Childhood Teaching (CECT).
The Program also has a six-tiered reward program over a period of 3 years for Early Learning Schools who are registered under our Program. Through the rewards and incentives scheme we provide the 6 rewards to teachers who meet the targets as set out by our education specialist. These rewards include capital to start a sustainable business idea, First Aid Training, Board Mentoring Training, WASH Project, teacher training and a classroom hall.
Digicel Foundation also believes in paving a way for their informal volunteers, to develop into formal teachers. The Teacher Qualification Upgrade Program saw 17 of Digicel Foundation’s most dedicated ELC teachers get enrolled into the Flexible Open Distance Education in an effort to assist them attain Grade 11 and 12 qualification. This will allow them to qualify for formal teacher training in tertiary institutions should they choose to pursue a career in this field.
