Mendi-Munhiu: Nol PS Launched

Wednesday, June 04, 2014 – Mendi, Southern Highlands Province, PNG: The Nol community celebrated the opening of a double primary school classroom on Wednesday, thanks to Digicel PNG Foundation. Situated almost three hours walk from Mendi town, Nol is the first school in the Mendi-Munhiu District to be a recipient of the Foundation’s education infrastructure programme. The infrastructure was built at a cost of K240, 000 and comes with a 9, 000 litre water tank, two ventilation improved piping latrines, a solar system and 40 desks – each made to accommodate two students. Teacher in Charge, Robin Joseph, said the school was grateful for the new classroom as it would provide its students an environment conducive to learning.  “We are proud to have received this support and thank Digicel Foundation for their continued commitment in aiding education throughout PNG, particularly to schools and communities where the need is evident,” Joseph said. Digicel PNG Foundation CEO Beatrice Mahuru in congratulating the Nol community said the Foundation believes strongly in empowering communities by recognizing positive efforts to promote positive change.  “At Digicel PNG Foundation, we invest in communities that demonstrate good community ownership and sound governance and to work more closely with them to build their communities and Nol is one such community. We thank them for their shared vision to educate their children and wish them every success in this academic year”, Mahuru said. To date, Digicel Foundation has funded: 342 community-based projects across 22 provinces in PNG and has reinvested K42.5 million into marginalized communities that has had a direct impact on more than 250,000 people. The Foundation plans to continue funding community projects in the areas of basic education and health with the aim of supporting communities as they become more self-reliant.  END
