Tuesday, 13th August , 20 13 Port Moresby : The Member for Tari-Pori, Hon James Marape today signed to partner in a tower rollout program today with Papua New Guinea’s leading telecommunications provider, Digicel PNG Limited. The join investment of K500,000 by each party will see a tower errected in Tari-Pori by December with schools and the Tari-Pori administrative hub connected by April 2014. “I am happy to partner with Digicel in their tower rollout plan to bring information technology that improves the administrative services in my district. Thank you Digicel for the information and telecommunication communications revolution. It is nothing short of a miracle. It is this telecommunications technology that has brought remote areas together. It has helped businesses to grow and our partnership is in recognition of these achievements,” said Minister Marape. Digicel’s Director for Government Relations, Gary Seddon thanked the Minister and assured him of Digicel’s commitment to Papua New Guinea: “We might be the biggest player in the market, but this is a direct outcome of our commitment to bringing world class, affordable communications services to Papua New Guinea. Our commitment is further highlighted with our further drop in voice and data rates.” Hon. Marape was also keen to partner with Digicel PNG Foundation in the area of educaiton in his district in collaboration with the district administrators and in line with their district development plans. “I am impressed by the work of Digicel PNG Foundation. I was present at the Tapini Launch and their drive to develop the rural schools is commendable. Please pass the Government’s gratitude and deep appreciation to the Digicel Board and Management for your development partnership,” said the Minister. He highlighted education as the priority in the O’Neil-Dion Government. He shared that in 2008 only 56% of students were in classrooms, in 2012 this increased to 70% and he was confident that Digicel Foundation’s investment in education infrastructure in collaboration with the District infrastructure development plans will grow this further. “Thank you for your commitment. I am excited about our development implementation partnership for my Tari-Pori electorate with Digicel PNG Foundation and I look forward to discussing further your special needs teacher training program development with our Education Department to see what we can to support your initiatives that are in line with our Government’s national objectives,” said the Minister. The CEO for Digicel Foundation, Beatrice Mahuru also expressed gratitude to the Member for his implementation development partnership and reassured him to maintain dialogue for the special needs teacher training program in the teacher training colleges across the country.
