DIGICEL FOUNDATION COMMITS $500,000 FOR HURRICANE REPAIRS AT WINDSOR CASTLE ALL AGE IN PORTLAND

The Digicel Foundation is assisting the recovery efforts of the Windsor Castle All Age School in Portland, one of the parishes hardest hit following the passage of Hurricane Sandy. This involves committing an additional half a million dollars to repair hurricane damage, at an Enrichment Centre the Foundation had established at the school. As part of its ongoing enrichment initiative, the Foundation had provided $1,700,000 in 2010, to equip a resource center at the institution. The Enrichment Initiative is a joint effort between the Foundation and the Ministry of Education, with the goal of increasing literacy and numeracy at the primary level, while striving to meet the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of achieving 100% literacy by 2015. However, as a result of Hurricane Sandy last month, the Enrichment Centre was one of several areas at the school to lose its roof, sustaining damage to the room and its contents rendering the centre unusable On November 7, 2012, Digicel Foundation Executive Vice Chairman, Major General Robert Neish, and Programme Manager for the rehabilitation of Redemption Market Everton King, visited Windsor Castle All Age to determine how best the Foundation could assist the institution. Following the visit the Foundation committed $500,000 to restore the enrichment centre. This financial commitment by the Foundation is well timed, as Eleanor Gooden, the Centre’s Coordinator, noted, “I feel for the loss of the centre because the children were really learning. They loved all the equipment they got to work with and enjoyed using the computers to write their stories.” The Windsor Castle All Age School has been making great strides in improving literacy levels of its students. In 2010, the school achieved 54% mastery in the Grade Four Literacy Exam, and for 2012, the faculty is confident of reaching a target of 64% mastery in literacy. Samantha Chantrelle, the Executive Director of the Digicel Foundation, added that, “The Foundation is committed to supporting Windsor Castle All Age, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that its immense progress does not falter due to hurricane damage.”
