DIGICEL FOUNDATION SUPPORTS MANDELA DAY WITH SPECIAL MOVIE TREAT FOR CHILDREN

In recognition of Mandela Day, a total of sixty-seven children, along with their caregivers from the Mustard Seed Home, Randolph Lopez School of Hope and Genesis Academy will be treated to a special Movie Matinee Day Out on Wednesday, July 18 at the Sovereign Palace Cineplex, courtesy of the Digicel Foundation. Recognized by the United Nations (UN), Mandela Day is a growing international initiative that encourages individuals to do something good for 67 minutes - paying tribute to Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of relentless contribution to South Africa and by extension mankind. Vicar General Gregory Ramkissoon from the Mustard Seed Communities noted that: “It is with heartfelt gratitude that we acknowledge the generosity of the Digicel Foundation and staff to the “least of our brothers” on the eve of Mandela’s birthday. They have given life to Mandela’s own philosophy that “mercy and generosity reside in every human heart and that we must be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than hate”. In another activity by the Digicel Foundation to commemorate the Day, over 30 staff volunteers will be visiting the Bustamante Hospital for Children to deliver gifts and spend time with the children in their Activity Centre. Digicel will also be donating 67 children’s books to the hospital’s Activity Centre. Other activities will include a staff contribution of cash which will be matched by Digicel to be donated to the Jamaica Autism Support Association (JASA), plus a social media competition for Facebook fans and Twitter followers to submit the best “Do something good for 67 minutes” ideas for a chance to win call credit and other prizes. Digicel Foundation Executive Director, Samantha Chantrelle noted that, “The Digicel Foundation has always worked with Mustard Seed, Genesis Academy and JASA and we’re happy to be treating these children again on this occasion. With a strong focus on building awareness and promoting the participation of our special needs community in every aspect of everyday life, we are delighted to be a part of this initiative, to take action and to inspire change. We encourage everyone to make every day a Mandela Day”.
