DIGICEL FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TO IMPROVE LITERACY AND NUMERACY

Digicel Foundation, at a press conference held at the Alahambra Inn on February 18, handed over a chqeque for JA$33.6 Million Dollars to Minister of Education, The Honorable Andrew Holness, to assist with the development of Enrichment/Resource schools at twelve Primary and Junior High Schools throughout Jamaica.

The total amount JA$33.6 million of this multi-tiered partnership will see the refurbishing and equipping of approximately 13 Literacy and Numeracy Rooms (Spanish Town Primary to receive two rooms) as well as the training and development of Literacy and Numeracy specialists for each room.

Minister Holness comments, “It is a struggle to get the illiterate students to settle down and focus on their work and so I would like to express gratitude to Digicel Foundation for their social conscience to the matter of literacy – it’s very open, supportive and transparent”.

The funding of this program and by extension the partnership is directly linked to the Digicel Chairman, Denis O’Brien’s committment to improve education in Jamaica.

“Digicel and the Digicel Foundation were born in Jamaica and so we feel compelled to ensure that all the elements that are necessary to enhance the lives of our future generation are in place”, commented Major General Robert Neish, Executive Director of the Digicel Foundation.

“The Enrichment Centres are designed to give children the right start and not only for remedial purposes”, added Minister Holness who further expressed that he anticipated further cooperation with Digicel Foundation.

Among the list of attendees at the press conference were principals of the twelve Primary and Junior High Schools across Jamaica who will be direct beneficiaries of Enrichment/Resource Centers; Regional Directors of the Education Regions and Mrs Ena Barkley, President of the Jamaica Teachers Association.

• Moneague Primary & Junior High
