Jose Marti Technical High School

Project Summary: Jose Marti Technical High School In an era of fast-paced advancement in the field of Information Technology, the students and teachers at Jose Marti Technical High School, Spanish Town were being hampered by an antiquated technology lab. The School desperately needed to upgrade the facility, replacing old typewriters with new computers, allowing students to access to the wealth of information available to them. In May 2006, the Digicel Foundation jumped on board, with the hope of bringing efficient and effective technologies to prepare students to successfully sit the CXC and Cape examinations and to open the door to greater opportunities for its graduates. The project which cost approximately $2M will benefit approximately 1,200 students within the school and 300 from the wider community. Digicel Foundation donates upgraded technology lab Press Release – Wednesday, May17th 2006 Since the launch of the Digicel Foundation in 2004, this non-profit organization established by Digicel has been committed to educating Jamaica’s youth. Further to this commitment, on May 16, the Foundation celebrated the official handing over of an upgraded Information Technology Lab, which they donated to the Jose Marti Technical High School in Twickenham Park, Spanish Town. Special guest at the ceremony, the Honorable Phillip Paulwell, Minister of Industry, Commerce, Science and Technology (with Energy), commended Digicel and the Foundation for their excellent representation of corporate citizenship. "Digicel has been a critical part of the communications landscape for the last few years and I challenge all businesses in Jamaica to follow their lead," said the Minister. "I want to encourage Digicel to continue the tremendous work they are doing for the children of Jamaica." The Minister also commented on the importance of information technology to Jamaica’s future. "We need to create a knowledge-based society, in which all Jamaicans have access to computers and the wealth of information they bring." Executive Director of the Digicel Foundation, Major General Robert Neish, gave an overview of the Foundation and its primary goals. According to General Neish, the Foundation focused on projects that had educational, social or cultural significance. "Our first project was the rebuilding of the Lakes Pen Basic School, not far from here, which was completed in a record time of six weeks. By 2007, we should have a project completed in every parish. We only have three parishes remaining so we are well on our way." He also expressed delight at seeing this project come to fruition and commented that so far the Foundation Board felt a great sense of satisfaction at achieving what they have achieved in less than two years. Principal of the school, Mr. Bevar Moodie thanked the Digicel Foundation for their invaluable help in completing this project that will greatly benefit the students and teachers of Jose Marti. "In its few short years of being a corporate entity, Digicel through its Foundation has been exceptionally giving. The Foundation has proven itself to be a truly significant and generous corporate member of society." Besides rebuilding the Lakes Pen Basic School in St. Catherine, the Foundation has among other things, allocated $200 million towards Jamaica’s Hurricane Ivan relief effort, provided recreational equipment for Arnett Gardens in Kingston and Farm Heights / Rose Heights in St. James and established a chair in Telecommunications Policy and Management at the University of the West Indies.
