COVID-19: DIGICEL AND ITS FOUNDATION SUPPORT THE HAITIAN POPULATION IN THE FACE OF THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC
Tuesday, April 21, 2020 – Port-au-Prince, Haiti: Due to the current global pandemic, Digicel in collaboration with the Digicel Foundation is providing assistance to the Haitian population through awareness and prevention programs and by supporting several hospitals to contribute to the effective management of possible cases and complications.
Since the early stages of the global epidemic, Digicel and the Foundation made a conscious decision to support various medical institutions and form partnerships with the Ministry of Health (MSPP) and other state and non-governmental entities to fight the spread of the virus by informing the Haitian population about good habits to adopt during these uncertain times. In addition, the Foundation has maintained its close relationship with communities by using its network of schools and organizations as channels that can facilitate the transmission of prevention methods throughout the country's 10 departments.
Furthermore, Digicel and the Foundation, aware of the precarious state of the Haitian hospital sector, donated 20 ventilators to the Mirebalais University Hospital, as well as donating money to this Hospital and that of Bernard Mevs to strengthen their capacities. Other miscellaneous donations were made to other organizations fighting coronavirus outside the partnership established with the MSSP.
To date, Digicel and its Foundation have donated approximately 100,693,812 Gourdes to the Haitian community and will continue to provide support as this period of crisis evolves. For this year, the Foundation also has a budget of 340,000,000 Gourdes that it will use to continue investing in its various programs, especially those focused on education, but also to intervene and stay by the side of the communities in these difficult times.
Digicel has also taken internal measures to stop the spread of the virus and these were implemented in its network of stores and partners in each of the country’s 10 departments.
"Our mission has always been to support the people of Haiti. Time is a long testament to this solidarity, whether in moments of celebration: through culture, sport or education. But also in the most difficult moments, especially during the passage of hurricanes Hanna and Matthew, the 2010 earthquake and the cholera epidemic, to name but a few. It is therefore natural that our determination to help the Haitian people remains unchanged in this period of crisis, when we are all facing many challenges. It is with this intention that we are taking the lead and playing our part," said Digicel Haiti CEO and Chairman of the Board, Maarten Boute.
