Thursday April 4, 2019, Port-au-Prince, Haiti - The Digicel Foundation publicly announced the grand winners of the second edition of the "Konbit Pou Chanjman” (Come Together For Change) campaign during an evening event held at the Marriott Hotel.
Launched in 2017 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Digicel Foundation, "Konbit Pou Chanjman" was intended to be an initiative to commemorate the 10 years that the Foundation had been working in Haiti and to offer the country’s non-profit organizations the possibility of obtaining financing to implement a community development project. However, given the success of the campaign, it was decided to turn it into an annual activity.
This year again, organizations were invited to submit projects to promote development of their communities in the following categories: education, culture, inclusion, livelihoods, access, and disaster prevention. The increase in applications has been very satisfying. Applications increased by 50% compared to last year, for a total of 450 projects submitted.
After jury evaluation, 72 projects were selected for site visits. Then 25 of these projects were chosen for the national finale. The campaign was expanded for the second edition, increasing from 11 winners last year to 16 winners this year and the award was increased to 800,000 gourdes per winning organization, for a total amount of about 13 million gourdes. To help these organizations perform even better, the Digicel Foundation has again offered training sessions on communication, leadership, management, and governance of non-profit organizations to the directors.
One case in particular merits additional mention. The "Union des Jeunes Progressistes pour l'Avancement de Grand-Bois Cornillon" [Union of Progressive Youth for the Advancement of Grand-Bois Cornillon] organization, that presented a project to improve access to potable water in the area, captured the jury’s attention. Considering the severity of the situation, the decision was made to accelerate the process for this organization and to finance its project. A memorandum of understanding was signed for this purpose last March and studies for construction are in the process of being finalized by Dinepa. As a result of this project, thousands of residents will soon have access to potable water in Grand-Bois Cornillon.
Commenting on the ceremony, the Executive Director of the Digicel Foundation stated: "Konbit Pou Chanjman" allowed us to discover once again the hundreds of committed women and men who work with meager financial means but with the goal of improving living conditions for the residents of their communities. Their motivation, their sense of engagement, and especially their faith in a better future for Haiti inspire us and motivate us to give the best of ourselves to continue to build together this country that we all dream about. I wish success to this year’s winners and especially perseverance to continue this noble struggle," concluded Mrs. Stransky.
