Our 150th School

Over 50,000 children attend schools built by the Digicel Foundation. Wednesday, November 19 , 2014, The Digicel Foundation, has written a beautiful page of history in education in Haiti today, inaugurating its 150th school built throughout the Republic in the presence of the Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Mr. Nesmy Manigat. Founded in 2011, the National School of Grande Savane was the last to be selected by the Digicel Foundation to complete its project to build 150 schools across the country. Until then, the school operated under trees and tarp roof covers; now it is a new facility with a modern look that meet today’s earthquake and hurricane resistant norms. The school is completely furnished with nine classrooms, an administrative block, a playground, sanitary facilities, and is also equipped with a computer lab and a library. Commenting on the inauguration, the Digicel Chairman, Denis O'Brien said: "The opening of this 150th school marks an important step in the commitment of the Digicel Foundation to work tirelessly to contribute to the efforts of the Haitian government to provide all children in the country with the opportunity to receive a quality education. It reflects our commitment to help primarily thousands of families who make enormous sacrifices to send their children to school - our goal is to ensure that they receive the best quality of instruction in schools complying with standards set by the Ministry of Education." "Today, seven years after the launch of our business, over 50,000 children are attending150 schools built by the Digicel Foundation. However, the work is far from over and we renew our commitment to continue to support education in Haiti, both in the construction of new buildings or in strengthening the capacity of teachers teaching in our schools, through our ongoing training program for teachers, "said Mr. O'Brien. From another point of view, the Chairperson of the Foundation Board, Josefa Gauthier said, "The feeling that we have experienced today is comparable to that of an athlete who has just crossed the finish line of a marathon. The only difference is the work of the Digicel Foundation is far from over because we have made a commitment to continue to help improve the quality of education in Haiti-and there is still much to do. "The National School of Grande Savane" marked a turning point in our school building program across the country, it symbolizes the vision of continuous improvement of our knowledge, " concluded Ms. Gauthier. Isaac Césaire, Director of the National School of Grande Savane said "this November 19, 2014 is a great day of celebration for our faculty and students who have endured the calamities related to the disastrous conditions of our old location. Today, words cannot express our deep gratitude to the Digicel Foundation. The whole community of Grande Savane is extremely grateful to the institution." The Digicel Foundation has invested more than $ 30 million USD in the construction program of 150 schools and has created over 10,000 jobs on different construction sites.
